"Courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to face it." --Lt.
Glenn Carney, a long-time residence of Sayre & Athens, passed away on October 20th, 2025 at the age of 83.
.
He was born in Elmira, NY on Sept 23, 1942 to Harold & Luela Carney, whom sadly he never knew. He grew up in two foster homes in Elmira and Waverly.
After graduating from Waverly High School, he proudly joined the US Army and was the youngest to advance to an E7 Sargent at the time.
He served gallantly in the Vietnam War and was honored and awarded the prestigious 'Bronze Star Medal with Valor' for literally saving his platoon from an ambush. This was not something he spoke of but was proud to have saved so many lives.
He served, honorably, in the Army as a soldier, war hero, Tank Commander and Drill Sargent, for 14 years, where is was most happy and where he found his purpose.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sharon (Riley) Carney (Athens Pa); his son Glenn P. Carney Jr (Elmira NY); his daughter Donna (Carney) Ayers (Corning NY); numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Per his wish, there will be no formal services but a plan is in place to bury some of his ashes in Arlington Cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Thomas Cremation and Funeral Service, 1297 Elmira St., Sayre, Pa.
