Helen Elizabeth Lohmann, 93, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, April 24, 2022, in the comfort of her own home in Waverly, NY. She was born on December 8, 1928, in Willow Grove, PA.
She graduated from Richboro High School in 1946, valedictorian of her class. Several years prior, she would meet the man who would become her life-long partner E. L. (Bud) Lohmann. Even before finishing high school, Helen would begin working for Bell Telephone as an operator, which she continued to do until she and Bud would marry on June 19, 1948. Not long after that, children started arriving, four of them.
As her husband advanced, they moved first to Fayetteville, PA, then Dover, DE, and finally to Waverly, NY. When the children became independent enough, Helen took a position as Admissions Clerk at the Robert Packer Hospital, working there for 28 years before retiring. Many remember her as the one who made them feel comfortable about being admitted into the hospital.
In her spare time, Helen enjoyed sewing, knitting, and reading, but she was famous in the neighborhood for her pies. She was also very active in the Presbyterian Church, spending many years serving as treasurer. She used those same accounting skills to serve as treasurer of the Hospital Auxiliary, and then later she would become secretary of the Elks. She also spent many years volunteering in the hospital gift shop.
Helen was predeceased by her parents, Fred and Helen (Williams) Roth. She is survived by her loving husband of 73 years, Bud, and her four children: George (Nancy) Lohmann, Mike (Dawn) Lohmann, Nancy (Gary) Swayze, and Donna (Curtis) Shipman. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren—Missy (Tony) Chuisano, Shawn (Staci) Lohmann, Paul (Lindsay) Franks, David (Jennifer) Swayze, Tish (Jay) Guzyk, Mike Lohmann, Craig (Bethany) Lohmann, and Meisha (David) Lohmann-Benjamin—as well as 15 great grandchildren and one great great grandson.
A celebration of Helen’s life will be held on Friday, April 29, 2022, at 2:00pm, at Valley United Presbyterian Church, 459 Park Ave., Waverly, NY. There will be no calling hours.
