Jack Terwilliger Obituary

Jack Terwilliger, 87, of Waverly, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday March 6, 2024. Jack was born at the Tioga General Hospital on June 28, 1936, to his parents Gilbert and Agnes Swartwood Terwilliger.

Jack graduated from Waverly High School in 1955. He served in the Marines from 1956-1959. Jack was a member of the Notre Dame Booster club and a passionate Notre Damer! Jack was a referee for over forty years in high school football and basketball doing many state finals in both sports, also college level mens basketball totaling over one thousand games. Including in this were: appearing in the game of the week featuring St. Bonaventure, also traveling to Syracuse, Sienna, Canisius, and Princeton to name a few. He volunteered reffing at Waverly Small Fry for years and umped softball and slow pitch at Quinlan's and East Waverly for many years. 

Jack was inducted into the Chemung County Sports Hall of Fame. He was inducted into Waverly Sports Hall of Fame in 1996., Section 4 Hall of Fame in 2000. The outstanding official for the Elmira basketball chapter is named The Jack Terwilliger Award and is given out each year. On March 26, 2010 the Village of Waverly honored Jack with a Jack Terwilliger Day for all his contributions to sports.

Jack loved vacationing at Myrtle Beach, SC. every year with his family.

Jack is survived by his wife of 66 years Alice, his sons: Michael and Patrick, His daughters: Angeline (Greg)Piper and Mary (David) Nash. His grandchildren:Michele,Sean ,and Eric Nash, Olivia, Cassandra, and Jacqueline Pipher, Kylie, Trent, and Madison Terwilliger. Also several nieces and nephews.

Jack was predeceased by his parents, his brothers: Lewis, Donald, Kenneth, and Carl, sisters: Betty and Dorothy.

The family will greet friends and family prior to the service on Saturday March 9, 2024 in the Church of The Epiphany church hall from 9AM to 10:45AM. Full military honors will be accorded at 10:45 AM prior to the mass. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 11AM at the Church of the Epiphany . Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
