Karen Duggan Obituary

Karen Louise Horn Duggan, 67, of Waverly, NY, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 30, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 13, 1956, in Sayre, Pennsylvania, to Frederick and Catherine Horn, who predeceased her. On September 24, 1977, Karen married her high school sweetheart, Bernard L. Duggan, and they shared 47 blessed years of marriage together.

She is survived by her beloved husband Bernard; her two daughters Jennifer Duggan Gettens of Lakewood, OH and Michelle (Victor) Lee of Sanford, FL; her five treasured grandchildren Nathan Lee, Vanessa Lee, Finley Gettens, Cora Gettens and Veronica Lee; Siblings: Linda (Robert) Hughes of Waverly, NY, Cathy (Frank) Catarisano of Canandaigua, NY, Thomas (Jody) Horn of Sayre, PA, Sharon (Michael) Hildebrandt of Sayre, PA, Kevin (Gina) Horn of Dundee, NY; Nieces and Nephews: Brian Hughes, Jeff (Hannah) Hughes, Christopher Hughes, Andrea (Kyle) Kebert, Alicia (Timothy) Hadden, Trey (Rachel) Hildebrandt, Paige (Jon) Kleiner, Frederick Horn, Caitlin (Shaun) Handwerk, Joseph Horn; and great nieces Sophia and Clara Kebert, Madison Handwerk and Parker Hildebrandt.  Karen is also survived by many loving in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of long-time friends.

Karen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister and friend. She had a vivacious spirit and brought joy to everyone she met. Karen was known for her kindness, generosity and caring nature. She was dedicated to her family and embraced every moment with them.

Karen’s life’s purpose exponentially grew with the births of her grandchildren; they were her pride and joy. She was known to them as Gammie and loved traveling to celebrate milestones, share vacations and to simply spend time with her grandchildren. Karen recently spent Thanksgiving in Florida with her daughters and grandchildren, where she went to Disney, walked in her first ever turkey trot and was immersed in Gammie life for a solid week. While in Florida with Nathan, Vanessa and Veronica, Gammie embraced what they loved, watching soccer and volleyball games, boating to the sandbars, reading and relaxing on the back porch and creating whatever games and crafts Veronica could come up with. In Cleveland, Gammie loved all of the sports Finley played, from baseball, basketball, and football, to time spent in trampoline facilities; he always kept her busy while Cora loved their shopping excursions and tagging along with the grownups.

Karen loved God, her family and friends.  Faith was Karen’s guiding light, the foundation of her moral compass. She attended Epiphany School and was a life-long member of The Catholic Community of the Epiphany where she served as a Eucharistic Minister.  She was a faithful servant and devoted her life to helping others.

Karen’s life work was her dedication to carrying on the legacy of Horn’s True Value Hardware where she grew up working alongside her family, especially with her father, Frederick Horn, and continued to grow the family business alongside her husband, Bernie, with love, perseverance and a strong dedication to the community where she often stated, “If we don’t have it, you didn’t need it anyway.”
