In Loving Memory
Susan Burton Flynn, cherished mother, grandmother, wife, sister, and friend, passed
away peacefully, at her beloved country home “on the hill", January 15th, 2026, in
Chemung, NY. During her final days Susan was cared for with the gentle love of her
husband of 45 years, Jerry Flynn, and her daughter, Tess Flynn-Belles. Susan was the
devoted and proud mother of Tess and loving “Mimi” to “her boys” - Harrison and Bruce
Belles.
Susan lived a full and joyous life guided by her passion for cooking, reading and her
family, her fascination with the natural world and, above all, her love for her husband
Jerry and her amazing daughter. She cherished her many lifelong friends and, most
central to her life, her extensive clan of Burton/McCabe family siblings and cousins.
Susan was born in Sayre, Pennsylvania at the Robert Packer Hospital on July 24,1951
to Ann McCabe Burton and Jack Reed Burton. She grew up on the McCabe farm in
Litchfield, PA, the middle daughter of a large, close-knit family where she embraced the
teachings of rural life and the beauty of the natural world.
Susan graduated from Sayre High School in 1969. Forever a proud SHS Redskin, she
served as a high-stepping majorette, looking grand with her baton and colorful red &
blue headdress. After attending Cazenovia College, Susan returned to Sayre to pursue
a career in medical technology. She graduated from the Robert Packer Hospital School
of Surgical Technology eventually receiving enough on-the-job training to become a
licensed perfusionist. She aced her board exam on the first attempt! Susan dedicated
her professional life to the medical industry, serving as a lead perfusionist at the Guthrie
Clinic in Sayre for 38 years. She was a hardworking and trusted member of the OR
teams.
Susan married Jerry Flynn in 1980 in South Lake Tahoe at Saint Theresa Catholic
Church. Together they built a beautiful and loving home in the hills above Chemung,
N.Y. Through 28 years she enjoyed nothing more than to gaze out across her 3-county
view of The Valley, her lifetime home, watching deer and other wildlife emerge from the
morning mist or the sunshine. As the seasons flowed, Susan bore close witness to the
light, clouds and storms rolling across her grand view.
An OG 1960s “Earth Mother”, Susan was a talented, inspired cook and naturalist,
sharing her knowledge and gifts with a wide circle of family and friends. A dinner at
Susan’s house was not to be missed! She loved music, dancing, arts and crafts and
get-togethers, always seeking out pockets of joy. Susan loved to laugh and cracked up
many a gathering with her unique outlook and sense of fun.
Susan is survived by her husband, Jerry Flynn, her daughter, Tess Flynn Belles and her
husband Jason Belles, her grandchildren, Harrison and Bruce Belles and her
siblings, Mike Burton (Marie), Nancy Stetz (Richard), Bobby Burton (Gail), Ron Burton (Susan), Phillip Burton (Cindy), Patrick Burton (Janet), brothers and sisters-in law, Don
and Susan Flynn and Jon and Karen Flynn and so many beloved nieces and
nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ann McCabe Burton, father, Jake
Reed Burton and brother, Tommy Burton.
A celebration of Susan’s life will be held later at the convenience of the family.
To honor Susan’s lifelong love of books and the ability to read freely, in lieu of flowers,
the family requests donations be made to the Sayre Public Library.
Susan Burton Flynn’s spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing
her. She will be deeply missed.
